Avia Has A Question

5:02 AM by SW

Regular commenter and contributer to the AC Milan blog, Avia, has a question for all of you, I was going to make suggestions, but who better than you guys to add your advice…
I would like to offer the opportunity to fellow Milan Offsiders the chance to deliver a personal message to the team as I’m looking for ideas for a banner to take along. I have been giving it some thought recently and i deviate from abuse aimed at Carlo or Galliani or some of the players (who i view as leeches sucking the life out of this squad) to praise for Ricky for staying, to thanking Maldini for the ERA of impeccable service we are highly unlikely to witness ever again, to asking Rino to stick his foot up this squads backside.
But im willing to open it up to the peeps reading this.
I have spoken to Rangers to check the deal with banners and they dont have a problem as long as there is no profanity (but im guessing that Italian dont count!)
So folks, over to you………………PS: any ideas of how i can find out which hotel Milan will be staying in??

Maldini Monday February 2nd, 2009

4:53 AM by SW

On this Maldini Monday I want to discuss this potential farewell Azzurri match for Paolo against Brazil. Please understand the intentions of this match are all in the right place, but I myself have never been a fan of national team farewell. I don’t like the idea of rolling out the geezer for one final meaningless performance and when I consider the type of player Il Capitano is and his humble personality as well, I am willing bet to that Paolo politely declines.Again, I am not saying that Paolo doesn’t deserve it; if anyone does it is him. The problem is Paolo in the Azzurri was never quite the same as Paolo in the Rossoneri. His Azzurri career was a bit, how should I say it, unlucky. 90 a loss at home to Argentina, 94 a gut wrenching loss, 96 a useless trip to England, 98 failure in france, 00 france strikes again, and 02 saw South Korea’s captain score over none other than Paolo for the golden goal that ended his National Team Career. What did Paolo do? He walked away; he walked away at the lowest point of his National Team career, why? Because he felt responsible, he also felt he could no longer play at that level, too bad he was wrong on both accounts.
Success on the International Stage is all that is missing from Paolo’s illustrious trophy cabinet, but sometimes I feel it is better that way. He is and always will be AC Milan and though he retired from the national team with the humblest and noblest intentions it opened the door for a successful run in Europe and a the opportunity for the Milan tifosi to enjoy him that much longer. While Nesta retired to focus on Milan and win a CL title or Totti retiring for vanity’s sake (never needed him anyway) don’t ever forget that Maldini left for the good of the squad, plain and simple.
Thanks but no thanks, is what I would say about the farewell and something tells me Paolo will say the same…you always looked the best in Red and Black!

Friday Milan Musings

4:48 AM by SW

As many of you already know I try to watch Milan games twice, losses especially. The second time around always allows for a more critical view, and for me at least, takes the emotion out of it. This review was a delayed because my life made a second viewing all the more difficult but I made a fair amount of observation in the first viewing to make this review fairly comprehensive.David Beckham is hungry, he is close to fit, and he wants to play football. The man proved it all in the first half, a goal, some telling crosses, and a great flank play, for a moment it was like he had been here all along. Many of you resent his off the pitch Hollywood antics, but divorce yourself from that for just a second and what do you have. A footballer who is playing his “golden” balls off to impress his coach and his new fans. Can you even remember the last time that type of passion was shown in the Rossoneri jersey, the man is playing for a spot to play for his country, plain and simple. Ronaldinho should take a minute and ask Beck’s what heart means. To digress for a bit, when Milan bought Dinho I said it would turn out like the Rivaldo nightmare, a few good games early on and then a slowly but pouty decline to the reserves. My prediction is starting to look more and more realistic, but what is even funnier is around the same time Rivaldo was brought into the mix so was Rui Costa. Difference is Rui Costa came in with fair less fanfare, far less expectations, and when it was all said it done who had the better Rossoneri career? Who said football isn’t cyclical!
Back to the Genoa match. Milan were in the driver’s seat up until the first substitution, now I can’t argue the squad didn’t need fresh legs, but I do have a sinking feeling that we could have held onto the lead if Carletto kept the rest in there. The inclusion of Flamini should have come sooner (earlier) it would have given him time to find a groove in the midfield, and it should have come at the expense of an attacking mid. Dinho was an unnecessary substitution to make, they were junk minutes and the game didn’t call for his inclusion, instead midfield hard man, heck I would have taken Emerson or even Antonini as the better option. I am not the biggest advocate on protecting the lead, the best protection is another goal, but we all know that is not the Calcio way, so we accept it the way it is.
Dinho is an attacking player, and at times he can be very good, but he was not what the lineup needed. The attack was disjointed upon his entry, and he tried to do much with possession, instead of just holding up the ball. I do not blame him for this, he wanted to impress Carletto and I appreciate that, but squeezing time off the clock was just as valuable if not more valuable than a goal. Defensively, Milan looked well organized early, but it was the late stages of the game that cost us as the gas drained out of the tank. We all thought it best for players be rotated to accommodate the 3 games in 7 days, ultimately Carletto paid for his overly brash comment that no Rossonero player needed rest.
This game was not all doom and gloom, Pato is looking more and more the part of a number two striker, and if you had a true number one things would be great. Borriello should be back, soon and the rumors from the boot say that Iaquinta has been considered as well, but the window is closing quickly for that to happen. Abbiati has cemented his place between the sticks, and for those non-believers in Christian, I remind you only of Dida’s poor performances of last season. Lastly is Pirlo, his return to form has been long in coming but his mobility, quick feet, and stellar free kicks lead me to believe that he is finding his legs once again. If one of those crossbars goes in from Wednesday evening, this post is a completely different animal.
Where do we go from here? Well Lazio for one, and considering the licking that was laid on them earlier in the season, and their loss of form you can call this match easy. Problem is no match is easy, and Lazio will be hungry for points. Milan will be without the services of Maldini which leaves me trembling in fear of the potential CB duo, anything but Senderos and Favalli! I have been checking incessantly over all the wires to see if Panucci has been bought to fill the void for the weekend, if we ever needed a versatile defender now is the time. I hate saying games are must win, but psychologically speaking they need the points, especially if Inter can rattle off another three. How we get those three points is a mystery considering that most of the eleven could use rest, but I guess it is up to Carletto to take the most in form and fit of the bunch. Never has it been so important to score a few goals early to go into cruise control for the rest of the match, a nil-nil dogfight will certainly push Lazio to favorites.

Wenger glad Kaka snubbed Manchester City

12:02 PM by SW

Arsene Wenger admits he is glad Kaka snubbed a move to Manchester City Football Club. The Blues were willing to pay £91million for the AC Milan ace, but the forward rejected the move despite the potential to earn a staggering £500,000-per-week. “The good thing in the decision of Kaka is that he has put the sport in front of finances and that is good for the fans and the game,” Arsenal boss Wenger told Setanta Sports. “But you will only have one case out of 20 like that. I know Kaka’s contract at AC Milan quite well and he is not in special need.”

Portsmouth Football Club are willing to offer Emerson a short-term deal. Tony Adams is desperate to add another midfielder to his squad during the January transfer window, after losing Lassana Diarra to Real Madrid for £20million.And reports suggest it is a former Bernabeu star who has jumped to the head of his wanted list, as he looks to take 32-year-old Emerson to Fratton Park this week. The Brazilian is currently plying his trade in Italy with AC Milan, but he is out of contract in the summer and he could even leave before this time if Pompey succeed with a loan offer

David Beckham scores his first goal for AC Milan

11:01 AM by SW

If David Beckham does eventually make the move from Los Angeles to Milan -- whether it's this spring or next fall -- the turning point might have come in Bologna on Sunday.Making his third consecutive start for AC Milan and playing the full 90 minutes, Beckham had his best outing yet for the seven-time European champion and also scored his first goal.

It wasn't a tame goal, either. No tap-in this, or lucky rebound. It was a cracker.Brazilian teenager Pato began the move with a surging run down the center of the field, scattering Bologna players in his path, before passing the ball to Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf on his right.Seedorf, who had scored the tying goal in what would eventually turn out to be a 4-1 rout for AC Milan, might have taken a shot but instead slipped the ball to an unmarked Beckham on his right.
The Galaxy midfielder raced into the penalty area and unleashed a rising right-foot shot that tore past Bologna goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli and just inside the right post.It was one of Beckham's best goals in a long time and he reacted to it with a delighted grin before being mobbed by AC Milan teammates. The goal, Milan's fourth of the match, enabled the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star to join a select group of players who have scored in each of Europe's top three leagues -- England's Premier League, Spain's La Liga and Italy's Serie A."It was a truly special goal, just as it is special for me to be playing here" in Italy, Beckham said, adding that he would save his game jersey as a souvenir. The England international, who hopes to earn a record-tying 108th cap when England plays European champion Spain in a friendly in Seville on Feb. 11, was not able to upstage Brazilian sensation Kaka, however.Just days after seeing a potential $150-million move to Manchester City come apart at the seams, Kaka was in top form. He scored twice, first on a penalty kick and then on a rocket-like left foot shot. All in all, it was a classic performance by Milan, which moved the ball around with ease. Beckham has slotted well into a midfield that on Sunday included Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini. He has played all but a handful of minutes in the Serie A team's last three games and has grown in stature and comfort with each one. Against Bologna, his running was sharper and he was more involved in the play than in the previous two outings. The improvement in his game has naturally led to increased speculation about Beckham staying with Milan, and the midfielder has not exactly discouraged such thoughts."I can't say what will happen," he said after Sunday's game. "Even if my contract says that I'll be here until March. We'll have to see.

"Told of Beckham's comment, AC Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti, who was coaching his 400th game for the team, tried to defuse a potential squabble between the Galaxy and Milan."Our hands are tied because he has a clear contract," Ancelotti said. "We can't do anything to change things [but] he can definitely do something. He must sort out his own contract with the American team. . . . We are capitalizing on his presence at the moment."Last week, Silvio Berlusconi, who doubles as Italian prime minister and AC Milan president, said the club would honor its agreement with the Galaxy."Who wouldn't like to have such a player in your team?" Berlusconi said. "He is showing the class, professionalism and commitment that makes him such a wonderful person and player."Having said this though, he has a contract with the Galaxy and he and my club should respect that."In the face of persistent questioning by the Italian media over Beckham's future, Ancelotti also was forced into making a statement."If Beckham is fine with us, we are happy," he said. "The fact that he plays is because he is a tactically intelligent player, disciplined and unselfish. He will decide what to do in his future."For the time being, it remains confirmed that on March 9 he will return to America."Meanwhile, the belief persists that there are moves going on behind the scenes that could see Beckham either stay in Milan or return to the Galaxy for the 2009 MLS season and then rejoin the Italian club on a full-time basis.
